2011 Dream Dinner
On August 12, 2011, our Foundation invited Chinese composer, Bright Sheng, and Chinese playwright/librettist, David Henry Hwang, to the Twin Cities to discuss with us the possibility of producing a new, contemporary opera based on Dream of the Red Chamber.
Together with Kevin Smith, our consultant, we had a very stimulating discussion. David Gockley, general director of San Francisco Opera, joined us for part of the afternoon. Everyone felt that there was a real possibility of bringing this idea to fruition.
In the evening, more than 80 friends of CHF, all arts patrons interested in this significant project, gathered at the Gramercy Park party room to welcome Bright and David. Under the watchful eye of, Yin Simpson, our very own stylemakeer, the room was turned into a sophisticated and warm space.
Catering by Asian Bistro, the food was delicious and satisfying. Following dinner, Pearl Bergad gave a brief history of the genesis of this project. Kevin Smith then discussed the long process of creating an opera, the steps and expenses involved. Bright and David then took over the podium, expressing their enthusiasm for this terrific idea and gave us their initial thoughts of this worthy project. Afterwards everyone had a chance to visit with them and each other. The evening ended on a high positive note.
