Our very own virtuoso pipa artist Gao Hong will be the featured artist at an online concert at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art this coming Thursday, September 24, at 5 PM (CDT).  Titled Look and Listen: Chinese Art and Music, Curator Jan Stuart will join Gao Hong in an exploration of the place the pipa enjoys in Chinese music and art.  Watch art works depicting the pipa in the hands of Buddhist deities and celestial beings while listening to Gao Hong perform both classical and contemporary works on the pipa.  A highlight will be Gao’s own composition Flying Dragon, complemented by dramatic depictions of dragons in Chinese ceramics and paintings.

Spotlighted by both the New York Times (Things to Do This Week) and the Star Tribune, we know you won’t want to miss this exciting and free online event!  Do register at https://smithsonian.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_hyXG5egqRg2gdbuO2cSwYw

Coincidentally ARC Music will be releasing a reissue, on September 25, of a CD Gao Hong recorded with her legendary pipa mentor Lin Shicheng in 1966.  Contact [email protected] for more details.
