Concert: OpenSource – Source @ 5

  • Westminster Hall

The opening concert of the FIFTH Festival of Source will feature all premieres from Minnesotans, including song cycles by Carol Barnett, local performer Chris Koza, and Minnesotan alumni of our MNSong Program from the last four festivals.

The Source Song Festival, in celebration of its fifth anniversary, has commissioned well-known Twin Cities composer, Carol Barnett  to write LONGING FOR HOME, a song cycle for baritone, mezzo and piano.  Barnett says, “I have found five wonderful texts, all dealing with some aspect of HOME – coming home, longing for home, the uncertainty of homecoming.  Poets include Mohja Kahn, Judah Halevim as translated by Robert Mezey, Eugene McCarthym Alla Bozarth, and Northfield native Bea Exner Liu.’  Bea spent the WWII years in China, married a Chinese man, and returned to the Twin Cities after the War.  She was an integral part of  the local Chinese community.  She was the author of two books, ‘Remembering China, 1935-1845’ and ‘Downriver People’, and numerous poems.  One of them is being set to song by Carol Barnett.
