Friday, September 6, 2019

1:30 pm – 3:00 pm
*ROOM CHANGE* 28 Folwell Hall

In 1963, at the eve of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, a feature film titled Early Spring in Februaryappeared in Chinese cinema and offered a critical reflection on the problems of utopia in its various iterations in Chinese cultural and political history. This talk discusses how this film, by comparing and conflating different utopian narratives, gives new meanings and critical power to the utopian images at a tumultuous moment while also asserting the cinematic medium’s presence in utopian discourses.
